Marie Francoise Theresa Martin was the last of nine children of a devoutFrench family at Alencon (France). Both her parents had at one timewealth drawn to the religious life but in their stead God accepted fiveof their offspring as religious. Little Theresa tried from her ninth yearonwards, to follow her sisters into the discaled Carmelite Conventat Lisieux. She was not yet sixteen when the Mother Prioress finallyconsented to admit her to their congregation.A childlike simplicity, utter humility, constant self sacrifice and a boundlesslove of God and trust in Him were some of her most outstandingvirtues. Through her ‘little way of performing perfectly the small dutiesof everyday life for the love of God’ she ascended the ladder of spiritualperfection. Her special task, she felt was to assist the church’s priestsand missionaries with prayers and sacrifices.The Little Flower as she has come to be popularly known was canonizedin 1925 by Pope Pius XI. She was declared as the Doctor of the Churchby Pope John Paul II recently. She is the patron saint of the aviators andof Russia and with St. Francis Xavier of all Catholic Mission.
