Thomas, surnamed “Didymus”(The Twin) was a simple fisherman inGalilee who was called by Jesus to become one of his twelve Apostles.A glimpse of Thomas great love for his Master is shown to us at thetime when he was ready to accompany Jesus to the house of Lazarus,saying, “We shall also go and die with him.” He has come to be calledthe “Doubting Thomas” from his refusal to believe that the Lord hadappeared to the other apostles. Moe than his doubt, Thomas wasexpressing his disappointment at not being present at the Lord’sapparition. The Lord did take not of this and rewarded Thomas withanother apparition where he uttered that timeless act of faith: ‘My Lordand My God’.St. Thomas came to India, landing at Kodungallur in AD52. Hepreached the Gospel and established seven churches/communities inKerala. While he was in Mylapore, he was stabbed to death in AD 72 atChinnamalai. He was buried at Mylapore , later the mortal remains weretransferred to Edessa in Syria and later to Orthona, in Italy, from wherea fragment of the relic was brought to Kalyan in the Eparchy of Kalyanand was deposited at the St. Thomas Pilgrim Centre on 15th December2002.
